New Maryland United Church Columbarium
A New Option For A Good Ending: The Columbarium
there was a cemetery day
when the cicadas sang high
where flowers caressed the graves
and we danced like children often do.
Meg Freeman
For many centuries cemeteries have been commonly found in churchyards, allowing churches to minister to the needs of the community, from baptism through life to death. With only half a dozen lots remaining for purchase, the New Maryland United Church cemetery is nearly at capacity. Therefore, in 2019, we made the decision to purchase a Columbarium. This is a relatively modern alternative, which more and more churches are offering their members. A Columbarium, [from the Latin meaning a dove cote, a place of peace and rest] is a collection of niches designed to house cremated human remains (cremains). Nestled between two birch trees, ours is a 32 niche Columbarium, crafted of granite. Each niche measures 1 cubic foot (12” x 12” x 12”), and can hold 2 urns. It becomes inscribed with the persons’ names and dates of birth and death. The Columbarium is self-funded, using income derived from the sale of niches for construction and operation.
Why erect a Columbarium at New Maryland United Church?
Currently, close to three quarters of our funerals involve cremation, and that practice is growing. A Columbarium uses far less land than cemetery lots, and reduces maintenance. Through the Columbarium, NMUC will provide a dignified, beautiful setting for housing the cremains, all at a cost savings.
Who may purchase a Columbarium Niche?
Interment in the NMUC Columbarium is available to anyone on a first come, first served basis. You do not have to be a parishioner here to purchase one.
What is the cost involved?
The Official Board has set the cost of a niche at $2000. Let’s compare that to a casket burial for 2 people, where 2 lots would total $1000. Then add the opening costs of $1100, plus a headstone (approximately $2000.), for an approximate total of $4100.
Even if a couple decides upon cremation, the cost of the single lot (for 2 urns) is $500, plus opening costs of $300, plus a headstone (approx. $2000.), bringing that total to roughly $2800.
Whatever you decide, cremation or casket, plot burial or scattering or Columbarium, your church is here to serve you from birth to death, and to walk with you through to your “good ending, and new beginning.” Thanks be to God.
